A few decades ago..
The acute shortage of rice in Asia in the early 60s was caused mainly by exploding population and low yields. IR8 was developed as a cross between Indonesian and Chinese varieties that gave higher yield. Termed as “Miracle Rice” it was adopted immediately by Indian farmers encouraged by the government that was intent on creating a green revolution. This also led to the decline of native rice varieties exacerbated further by growing hybrid varieties & synthetic farming methods.
Re-emergence
Spirit of the Earth an NGO based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu as taken a leadership role in supporting the farmers in Tanjore, Tamil Nadu to scale this and reach out to people. Following their footsteps, several others are now growing heritage varieties in places like Tirunelveli, Karur and other regions. All these farmers use organic farming techniques. As a result, the native varieties are making a comeback.
Maintain Bio-Diversity
Maintaining bio-diversity is integral to the functioning of the ecosystem. Each grain is unique – there are pest resistant, drought tolerant, seasonal, short and long duration crops – by rotating the various heritage rice varieties, it ensures the cycle of harvests are productive.
Boost Health
Heritage rice varieties are known for their nutritive value – every grain is loaded with immense health benefits, and used in different occasions. This allows one to savour a variety of grains all through the year and gain good health.
Protect the Environment
A seed bank plays a key role in the development, maintenance and promotion of agro-biodiversity on the farm. By rotating crops and following a traditional agricultural practices, we will be able to leave the soil richer.

By Supporting Farmer initiatives and efforts around Heritage Rice, we can help them diversify their product and reduce their risk.
